What is ASTM and What Does It Mean for PPE? – PPE & Mask Reviews During the COVID-19 Pandemic

ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials, an international standards organization that aims to provide accountability and best practices when it comes to testing safety materials.

In the case of PPE, there are 3 levels of ASTM testing: ASTM 1, ASTM 2, and ASTM 3 (the highest level of efficacy).

Different companies may claim to test their PPE such as masks at ASTM Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3, however, only with laboratory data are they allowed to make such claims!

BUYER BEWARE!

Make sure masks tested have been tested by an approved facility and that testing is up-to-date (within the past 6 months). With regular testing, you can be sure that masks being manufactured are made of the highest quality materials and follow strict protocols.

ASTM Level 3 is reserved for those mask makers making “surgical” quality masks—but the caveat here is that the FDA needs to additionally sign off, which is why you’ll see products listed as “FDA” listed face masks, but may not list as “surgical.” There typically is no difference between a surgical mask testing at ASTM Level 3 vs a face mask testing at ASTM Level 3, however having an FDA listing and a manufacturer registered with the FDA provides further piece of mind!

Plan on spending about 20% more for these quality products as well! Masks made with poor quality materials, or those coming from overseas where quality control may be lacking are typically pennies to produce, and flood the market with low cost “junk” masks. Only top producers from around the world will have an FDA registration or listing, and further can be truly listed as surgical, or pass rigorous ASTM Level 3 testing!

Given the times we’re in, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has discouraged door-to-door trick-or-treating, parties and even wearing regular Halloween masks rather than ones that can prevent the disease’s spread.

First, we’ll quickly go over what ASTM Level 3 means (but for an in-depth look, visit our previous article):

ASTM is an international standard that essentially separates the good manufacturers from the bad, and these Lutema masks are super good, passing vigorous ASTM Level 3 testing which involves laboratory testing flammability (Class 1), bacterial filtration (Greater than 98%), and synthetic blood penetration (A pressure of 160mmHg achieving a Level 3 barrier rating!)—Lutema passes all with flying colors with their testing data located on each product…
